Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was only a young teenager when her father who worked as the carnival barker, passed away. The mother of the family had to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She went to school in the area. But she only stayed in the school for two years, before leaving to pursue her acting career. There were many hurdles to overcome on the path she chose to pursue. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine however, no theatre job opportunities came up. After a brief stint as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home and quit her position. There, she made enough money with her ushering duties throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She also studied drama and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
